Did Zack really die?

Any normal person would have easily died after having two rounds emptied on his chest at point blank range. But, throughout the game, we begin to see that SOLDIERs are anything but normal.

There are a number of theories floating around that Zack never actually died. The most popular one that I’ve heard is that he’s actually the guy with the orange hat in Sector 5 or 6 (can’t remember which) inside the pipe and suffering from Mako poisoning.

I don’t think it’s him. Why? Because the guy is wearing an orange hat! Zack has more fashion sense than that. A snail has more fashion sense than that!

But, seriously. It could have been him. He could have Mako poisoning from whoever brought him there. Even for a first class SOLDIER to survive the kind of beating Zack took would take a lot of cure spells. Enough to give him Mako poisoning? If materia can give you Mako poisoning, then definitely. The guy also has a tattoo, like which Zack also may have had.

However, I still don’t think that’s him. Aeris and Cloud went in and visited this man. Cloud may not have recognized him, but Aeris would have. So maybe she just didn’t say anything... I don’t think so. She admits to caring deeply for Zack, and if she found him that ill in a pipe somewhere, she’d take him home and take care of him.

I don’t think Zack made it. He may be my favorite character in the game, and I may even have a fanfiction where he comes back, all not-dead and such, but honestly? I’m fairly certain he’s not coming back.

We know that there is someone speaking to early game Cloud in his sleep, a voice that seems to be trying to help him remember who he really is. This could be the real Cloud, so to speak, talking to him from inside his own subconscious. Or it could be Zack, speaking to him through the lifestream. Cloud can hear the Cetra, remember. He just can’t understand them. Why wouldn’t he be able to hear Zack’s voice as well? It’s my personal belief that it’s Zack.

Truthfully, the only way I think Zack could have survived is if Jenova had decided that he wasn’t a threat and she wanted him at the reunion. But the fact of the matter is that Zack was a threat. He still had his sanity. He’d managed to dash off with Cloud and make it half way across the globe before she was able to catch up with him. He moved against her. She punished. That’s all.
